Get the Right Sleeping Bag For Your Next Adventure

Posted by admin on August 21, 2011

If you are planning an outdoor adventure for anytime soon, sleeping bags are certainly one of the high items on your list of things to bring. Depending on the climate and whereabouts of your adventure, there is one out there that is just right for the occasion.

They come in three basic shapes. The first is the rectangular shape which is pretty self explanatory. It provides a roomy and comfortable space for you to sleep. Some rectangulars are double sized so they can fit two people at once. The second shape is the “mummy” or cocoon style. This particular style is more form-fitting to your body and is usually more lightweight, making it ideal for use when hiking. The third style is the tapered. This style starts wider at the shoulders and then gradually tapers down to your feet, contouring to the shape of your body. Although rectangular sleeping bags can be found for lower temperatures, mummy and tapered sleeping bags tend to be more desired by the experienced camper and hiker.

When purchasing yours, you also need to consider the temperature of the place you will be sleeping.

They come with numbers called ratings. Ratings relate to the lowest temperature that a sleeping bag will keep you warm at. For example, if it is rated at -20 degrees then it will keep you warm in climates that may reach -20 degrees at night. If you are planning on camping in a cold climate, make sure that your sleeping bag has a rating that won’t leave you freezing at night. On the contrary, you don’t want to have one that will leave you sweating all night either.
